Along with trash bin, extension cords… if I need it, I bring it! No laundry list of accommodations you need to make. (Although it does require access to an outlet if we’re doing your hair!)

Fun fact: Natalie was the very first mom I styled when working with @daniellehobbsphotography a few years ago!

Not only is it a joy to work with so many moms again and again for their portraits, it absolutely makes my day to get messages like this :

“You did my hair for my newborn photos in August and absolutely nailed it. I have headshots and an important work conference this Sunday in DC... I’d love to look as confident on Sunday as I did in those photos. Thank you for all you did to make me feel like myself but more polished!”

While I wasn’t able to help Natalie with her hair (this time! 🤞🏻) for her conference, I was happy to provide her with information on how to create the natural yet defined curls I did for her newborn session.

Even though I don’t do weddings anymore for brides, I DO still take appointments in my studio for special occasion hair (and makeup! 💄) for all kinds of events like black tie galas, military balls, and more!

I got a request for a high updo for an upcoming event, and I realized I really don’t have much in the way of high updo’s on my page. And they’re so beautiful and trending this year!

So here’s one I created a few months ago for a styling competition that has been patiently waiting in the drafts folder for entry time… just in time for them to switch up the submissions process this year! Oh well! So much for waiting!

Oh Hi There!

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve posted so let me take a second to welcome all the new faces to my page!

The summer has been crazy- with weddings, family time (yay for mini vacations being possible again thanks to us all getting vaccinated), and getting ready for the school year back to normal.

Fall wedding season is off to a great start already, and it’s nose to the grindstone until the end of the year. Thank you to everyone for their patience as I navigate the larger than normal last minute requests for schedule changes this year. I know it’s due to COVID throwing wrenches 🔧 in plans like it’s Armageddon out there, so if you’re wondering what’re I’ve been it’s likely behind my computer screen rewriting timelines and coordinating with my assistants.

2022 is almost booked, so if you are thinking of working with me for your big day next year, please note that I have room to accept FOUR more weddings for the entire year, and that’s it! (I have two brides waiting on dates from venues, so technically that’s only like two more…) so that means if you send me an inquiry and I say yep I’m available but cannot guarantee that will remain the situation long, that’s not a line I’m feeding you!

I have a set number of weddings I cap myself at so I can balance time with my family and give each bride 100% of my attention, which means that while dates may remain I booked by weddings once I reach that cap my books close.

Will my makeup 💄 last until the reception? 🤔

In my 14 years of doing makeup for weddings, I hear all the time from brides how surprised they are by how well the makeup held up! I've even had a bride who told me they slept in it and wore it to brunch the next day.

FYI- that's a big NOPE on my list. Zero stars. 0⭐ Highly don't recommend. Please wash yo face ladies. 🧼

Whether you want a dewy finish, matte finish, or somewhere in between, the foundations I use in my kit are professional grade and made to stand up to heat, humidity, and twerking to your heart's content. 💃🏻

And by layering all the RIGHT products in the RIGHT formulas and locking it all in place with that minty fresh setting spray- you never have to worry about it fading, settling, or streaking. Even my lash glue is waterproof!

How long does it take on the wedding day?

If you've been a bridesmaid in a wedding lately, you probably already know that the wedding day is going to be a LONG day!

I do my absolute best to minimize the time you spend getting ready while making sure that there's till enough time to get your whole group picture perfect. More often than not, you'll need to be completely finished with hair and makeup 2-3 hours before your ceremony time to allow enough time for dressing, photos, and to be out of sight before your guests arrive and are seated.

That's a long day for anyone, and as such I limit the amount of hours in the getting ready process to no more than 5. You don't want to be completely exhausted before the party even starts! This means that if you have a large bridal party, we are going to require additional assistants to get everyone done on time.

I typically will schedule 45 minutes per bridal party for each service (hair or makeup) and an hour for the bride whenever possible. When multiple artists are working on your bridal party at the same time, we can be incredibly efficient and keep things as relaxing as possible.

How to wear your hair on windy days...

Let's talk about volume for a second.

When you want a lot of volume, you have to start it closer to the front hairline if you want to see it from the front.

This usually means that if you want that Pinterest braid wrapping around from your part to the bun, it's going to push the volume further back towards the crown, and make it less visible from the front.

Often, you'll see inspiration images from the back or the sides. Rarely do you see the full 360. If you're worried about volume and softness, I recommend having face framing pieces out to create more dimension and height close to your face.

So if you're the kind of person who wants everything pulled back, a big braid, and lots of volume from the front, we're going to have to either compromise somewhere or add in a bunch of extra hair, crimping, texture powder, and book in for at least an extra 20-30 minutes for your updo.

it becomes about more than just your hair or your makeup.

It becomes about helping you put into words what you're looking for. (Not everyone always knows how to verbalize what they want- especially when it comes to face framing, makeup, or even curl styles.)

It becomes about helping you feel confident in yourself. (Sadly, too often I see brides who have let others' opinions on their looks drag them down and set unrealistic expectations for themselves- I'm lookin' at you mamas! Be kinder to your daughters please.)

It becomes about helping you relax and forget about the rest of the to-do list- the seating arrangements, the headcounts, and deadlines. (I can talk about literally anything, and I'm happy to talk about nothing if you'd rather have those moments be quiet instead.)

It becomes about listening to what you want and not just doing what I think will look best. (Although, I'm happy to give my opinions about what we can accomplish or not, I've had my wedding day and get to do hair and makeup hundreds of times a year. I'll always pick the nude lipstick and an updo. My opinion is frankly kinda boring, so go with your heart instead, love.)

Way back in January I put out a casting call for some models to come play in the studio for a few hours so I could test new products, posing, lighting, and attempt to make some reels.

Well, the reels didn't work out, but the styles sure did!

I absolutely fell in LOVE with this updo I created for my former bride Olivia, and it was so wonderful to see her in person after so long.

Think half up looks are only for long hair?

While the end result may look a little different on hair that's only shoulder length, you can absolutely still do a half up look with shorter hair!

Check out this look I created for my model Stephanie at a recent styled shoot at @strong_mansion_md. To keep the look soft around the face and be able to keep it textured and still have some volume, I left pieces out around her face. Trying to force shorter hairs into the twists back from the face would have made the end result too harsh.

Remember, if you have shorter hair, you need to keep a balance between what you can see from the front, so face framing is important.

I know we all hate to think about it (it honestly gives me heartburn), but it's the reality of the world we're living in right now. And no thanks to state government, it's hard to know exactly WHEN "normal" is coming back.

I'm all for keeping our loved ones safe. Don't get me wrong. But weddings can't just "reopen" like a restaurant. They take months of planning. Guests need to make travel arrangements. Caterers need headcounts. And venues have to follow state guidelines on guest restrictions. It's a lot to juggle, and I have all the sympathy for all the brides out there trying to navigate it all.

That being said, I'm here to help you every step of the way and do what I can to make the process as simple as I can.

Until further notice, if you have to reschedule your wedding for ANY reason, whether it's pandemic related or not, the following policies apply:

As long as it is being moved to a date I am currently available and your originally contracted wedding date is more than 45 days away, I will transfer the contract and money paid to a new date within 365 days of your originally contracted date once with no additional fees.

In order to reschedule, you MUST contact me prior to rescheduling to request a list of my available options or provide me with a list of dates you are considering so that we can work together to transfer your date.

What should I wear to my hair or makeup trial?

It's always best to avoid color in your outfit if you're going to have your makeup done. The color of your shirt can reflect up onto your face and make it look ruddy or overly "done", so I recommend wearing a white shirt.

This also really helps you to gauge how your makeup will look on your wedding day! When you're wearing a flannel shirt or something casual, your makeup will instantly look more intense by comparison.

You're not going to be walking around all casual on your wedding day, so make sure your outfit isn't sending you conflicting information!

Plus, a white t-shirt is similar to a wedding dress when it comes to keeping the outfit plain on the top half so you can get a honest feel for how the hair and makeup looks on its own, and a t-shirt neckline means there won't be anything rubbing against the hair and pulling it apart. Add some dazzle by throwing on your wedding earrings or necklace for a more accurate feel.

Do NOT wear:

1. Anything with a collar or a hood. It will get in the way of styling the hair and the longevity of the look.

2. Shirts with bright colors. They reflect and detract from your makeup look, making it hard to tell if you actually like the color. It's also harder to pick a lip color that looks good if it's competing with anything red, pink, orange, or purple.

What should I wear to my hair or makeup trial?

It's always best to avoid color in your outfit if you're going to have your makeup done. The color of your shirt can reflect up onto your face and make it look ruddy or overly "done", so I recommend wearing a white shirt.

This also really helps you to gauge how your makeup will look on your wedding day! When you're wearing a flannel shirt or something casual, your makeup will instantly look more intense by comparison.

You're not going to be walking around all casual on your wedding day, so make sure your outfit isn't sending you conflicting information!

Plus, a white t-shirt is similar to a wedding dress when it comes to keeping the outfit plain on the top half so you can get a honest feel for how the hair and makeup looks on its own, and a t-shirt neckline means there won't be anything rubbing against the hair and pulling it apart. Add some dazzle by throwing on your wedding earrings or necklace for a more accurate feel.

Do NOT wear:

1. Anything with a collar or a hood. It will get in the way of styling the hair and the longevity of the look.

2. Shirts with bright colors. They reflect and detract from your makeup look, making it hard to tell if you actually like the color. It's also harder to pick a lip color that looks good if it's competing with anything red, pink, orange, or purple.

Can you spot the tiny little thing driving me absolutely BANANAS about this photo?

I pushed it back in seconds after this photo was taken!

Yup, that little hairpin that decided to poke its head out to see what's up.

I'm a HUGE stickler for seeing the pins in the hair, but when working with fresh flowers or babies breath, I've found that the U-shaped pins work best for securing them in the hair. But the downside is that sometimes they can start to wiggle their way out if the hair is particularly silky. (Whoever would have thought super silky healthy hair would have a downside?!)

This photo showcases Carina's crown braid so perfectly I couldn't help but overlook the popped pin and post it anyways. Besides, I remember burying it nice and deep again on my way out the door, so I know it didn't come loose the rest of the day anyways.

How do you keep your style looking fresh and perfect until the fat lady sings (or at least until that sparkler ✨ send off?)

Here are my top tips for making sure your hair stays looking amazing all day long! 👇

1. Don't sit or lay back on it. Seems pretty Duh! 🤦‍♀️ But honestly, I can't tell you how many times I've looked over and seen a bridesmaid casually lounging on the couch in the bridal suite with her head back and her hair totally smooshed. 😳😩

Be still my heart, it cuts deep every time. Ladies, please sit up if you don't want to sit down in my chair again.

2. Avoid going in and out into the heat/rain/wind/etc. I cannot control the weather. Moisture breaks down curl in naturally straight hair and fluffs up frizz in naturally curly hair.

Products and technique only do so much.

3. Don't go set up your wedding venue. Especially if it's August. Just hire someone else to do it, or get it done before I show up. Humidity, heat, and sweat are murder on your scalp oils.

Hair goes flat and limp or looks greasy and wet, and unless I'm redoing it over again and blow drying that moisture out, it's hard to maintain that soft touchable romantic look.

4. Want something changed? Let me do it. Too many times there's someone showing up at the end with a sheepish look and a "sorry I f&#ked this up" apology. I know where the pins are. I can adjust it easier and faster than you can. My ego won't be bruised if you don't love something.

My patience however will be irked if you can't just tell it to my face and try to MacGuyver it in the bathroom.
